Adidas Social Media Shoe concept moves tweets to the track

Adidas is known for making connected shoes -- but never quite as linked-up as a Nash Money concept making its appearance late into the London Olympics. The Social Media Barricade weaves the guts of a phone and a basic two-line LCD into a running shoe, letting the footwear take Twitter updates very literally on the run through a public account. Even the signature Adidas stripes change their hue through remote control. Before anyone gets visions of athletes checking congratulatory tweets after the 100-meter sprint, just remember that it's an idea rather than a production blueprint: although Adidas is quick to call the Social Media Barriacade the "future of athlete connectivity," the only athletes putting eyes on a pair right now are those swinging by the Olympics' media lounge for interviews. Knowing this, we can still imagine some future shoes padding runners' egos at the finish line during the 2016 Rio games.

Photographer Ahae Father of South Korea's ... - Travel + Leisure

08.08.12

201208-b-ahae-photography-waves-on-pond-2011jpg

Actually?and without even mentioning the established international success of the Lee Ufans and Nam June Paiks of the world?it?s been a banner few weeks for art in the Koreas: First it was announced that the mystery woman who?s been photo-bombing North Korea?s Kim Jong-un (you know, the one everyone thought was his chicer, slimmer sister for a hot minute?) is, in fact, his wife ? and some sort of singer to boot, seriously raising the bar for art?s co-option by the Man.

Then this guy assembled a functional satellite, for the equivalent of $500, basically in his basement, and will be launching it into space in the name of Achieving One?s Artistic Dreams. And underground hip-hop artist PSY released what is, seriously, the best summer video. Ever. Now, septuagenarian South Korean businessman-turned-amateur-photographer Ahae is doing his bit for the Land of the Morning Calm. Having previously soothed viewers in New York, London, and Prague, his one-man show, Through My Window, has alighted in a purpose-built pavilion in the Tuileries Gardens, adjacent to the Louvre?the first such structure ever allowed there?where it will be on view through August 26th.

The selection in Paris has been culled from over two million photos, shot over the course of three years as part of Ahae?s effort to document the evolving sliver of natural grace that flew, hopped, and trotted its way past his studio window in the South Korean countryside: swanning herons, leggy deer, lapping waterfowl, maple trees in autumn, and shivering ponds of speckled blues and greens that recall Monet?s Water Lilies, coincidentally a stone?s throw away at the Orangerie. The images are serene and contemplative but also super-crisp, hyper-realist, ?ber-detailed, and totally un-retouched, like visual haiku courtesy of David Bellamy. The subject matter?s initial preciousness is blunted by the archivist?s technical exactitude, the scientist?s insistence on reality, and the dreamer?s belief that he can make a difference.

201208-b-ahae-photography-clouds-with-bird-2010jpg
Ahea is an entrepreneur, inventor, designer, environmental activist, Taekwondo black-belt, exercise guru, painter, sculptor, poet, and photographer. He owns an environmentally-friendly multinational paint-and-resin conglomerate, two organic tea plantations, and a lavender farm in SoCal; in his free time, he used to design small ships that still cruise the Han River. By his own estimate, he holds over a thousand patents, for everything from home-improvement gizmos to anti-radiation pigments. He might be able to turn lead into gold. But Ahae?s somewhat schizophrenic bio hides a serious commitment to conservation, evidenced through his organic farms, eco-friendly businesses, and wildlife protection efforts. This sincerity elevates Through My Window far above the dabblings of an ADHD tycoon with several thousand dollars worth of hi-tech toys.

With its literal opening that mimics both the camera?s limited aperture (emphasizing that the slice of life presented here is fragmentary and selective in nature) and the photo?s frame (underscoring the photographer?s actual and metaphorical remove from his subject) Through My Window places Ahae in a rich photographic tradition that stretches from the first print ever, Nic?phore Ni?pce?s 1826 View From the Window at Le Gras, through Stieglitz?s years-long series of back-window shots from galleries 291 and An American Place. But while Stieglitz shot modernity and the clear passage of time on a constantly evolving urban landscape, Ahae seeks to capture the natural world?s unerring constancy; and where Stieglitz?s work revealed his assimilation of the avant-guard, Ahae seems wholly uninterested in anything that might ever be reported in Artforum.
201208-b-ahae-photography-water-deer-2009jpg
On the far outer fringe of a contemporary scene actively engaged with social issues and current events, Ahae?s Nat Geo imagery seems anachronistic: it represents the world as it might have been fifty ? or 500 ? years ago. And that, actually, is Ahae?s very timely, super-current, and highly socially engaged point. The spot outside his window doesn?t look terribly different from what it did a century ago not because it?s representative of the world at large, but because it very much isn?t. It looks as it does only because the photographer has spent the last two decades protecting it. His images, then, enact a stillness belied by the rapidly changing ecology their maker seeks to protect.

On the surface, Ahae's millions of prints sing the obvious and cyclical song of days and seasons, death and rebirth, nature triumphing in all her majesty. But in shooting only the multiplicity of life percolating on a small strip of land he?s spent years shielding and preserving, the Al Gore of the art world highlights a striking contrast with those unprotected lands he doesn?t photograph; in what?s missing, he tells the less obvious and more urgent story of global warming, deforestation, and ecological apocalypse, a story that isn?t cyclical so much as flat-lining?and potentially irreversible.

US starts landmark Agent Orange cleanup in Vietnam

DANANG, Vietnam (AP) ? The United States on Thursday began a landmark project to clean up a dangerous chemical left from the defoliant Agent Orange ? 50 years after it was first sprayed by American planes on Vietnam's jungles to destroy enemy cover.

Dioxin, which has been linked to cancer, birth defects and other disabilities, will be removed from the site of a former U.S. air base in Danang in central Vietnam. The effort is seen as a long-overdue step toward removing a thorn in relations between the former foes nearly four decades after the Vietnam War ended.

"We are both moving earth and taking the first steps to bury the legacies of our past," U.S. Ambassador David Shear said during the groundbreaking ceremony near the area where a rusty barbed wire fence marks the site's boundary. "I look forward to even more success to follow."

The $43 million joint project with Vietnam is expected to be completed in four years on the 19-hectare (47-acre) contaminated site, located near Danang's commercial airport and an active Vietnamese military base.

Washington has been slow to respond, quibbling for years over the need for more scientific research to show that the herbicide caused health problems and birth defects among Vietnamese. It has given about $60 million for environmental restoration and social services in Vietnam since 2007, but this is its first direct involvement in cleaning up dioxin, which has seeped into Vietnam's soil and watersheds for generations.

Shear added the U.S. is planning to evaluate what's needed for remediation at the former Bien Hoa air base in southern Vietnam, another Agent Orange hotspot.

The remediation begins as Vietnam and the U.S. forge closer ties to boost trade and counter China's rising influence in the disputed South China Sea that's believed rich in oil and natural resources. The U.S. says protecting peace and freedom of navigation in the sea is in its national interest.

The Danang site is closed to the public. Part of it consists of a dry field where U.S. troops once stored and mixed the defoliant before it was loaded onto planes. The area is ringed by tall grass and a faint chemical smell could be detected during a visit to the area Thursday.

The contaminated area also includes lakes and wetlands dotted with pink lotus flowers where dioxin has seeped into soil and sediment over decades. A high concrete wall separates it from nearby communities and serves as a barrier to keep residents from fishing in the tainted water.

The U.S. military dumped some 20 million gallons (75 million liters) of Agent Orange and other herbicides on about a quarter of former South Vietnam between 1962 and 1971, decimating about 5 million acres (2 million hectares) of forest ? roughly the size of Massachusetts.

The war ended on April 30, 1975, when northern Communist forces seized control of Saigon, the U.S.-backed capital of former South Vietnam. Some 58,000 Americans died, along with an estimated 3 million Vietnamese. The country was then reunified under a one-party Communist government. Following years of poverty and isolation, Vietnam shook hands with the U.S. in 1995 and normalized diplomatic relations.

The Agent Orange issue has continued to blight the U.S.-Vietnam relationship because dioxin can linger in soils and at the bottom of lakes and rivers for generations, entering the food supply through the fat of fish and other animals.

Although the chemical remains at the Danang site, U.S. officials said Thursday that containment measures implemented in recent years temporarily ended the public health threat to the local community.

In 2007, Vietnamese authorities ? with technical assistance from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and funding from the nonprofit U.S.-based Ford Foundation ? poured a 6-inch (15-cm) concrete slab half the size of a football field over the contaminated area where Agent Orange was mixed. Dioxin is not water-soluble and only spreads when rainfall and runoff move contaminated mud.

Vietnam's Ministry of Defense and the U.S. now plan to excavate 73,000 cubic meters (2.5 million cubic feet) employing technology used to clean superfund sites in the U.S.

Workers will first dig down about 2 meters (6.56 feet). The soil will then be heated to 335 degrees C (635 Fahrenheit) in special containers where the dioxin will break down into oxygen, carbon dioxide and other substances that pose no health risks to humans or animals.

Vietnam's deputy defense minister, Nguyen Chi Vinh, said Thursday he hopes to receive more support from the international community and the U.S. government to help remediate dioxin hotspots elsewhere across the country.

The former U.S. air base in southern Phu Cat has already been identified, but he said many dioxin-contaminated areas in Vietnam have not been adequately assessed.

It is still unclear how much the U.S. will help clean up in the long term and how much it will allocate for people who claim to be Agent Orange victims.

'Cold fusion' co-discoverer Martin Fleischmann dies

Martin?Fleischmann, the British electrochemist who in 1989 controversially proclaimed to have discovered a way to produce nuclear fusion in a room-temperature glass bottle, passed away on Friday.?

By Peter Svensson,?AP Technology Writer / August 7, 2012

British chemist?Martin?Fleischmann, who stunned the world by announcing that he had achieved nuclear fusion in a glass bottle, has died after a long illness.?

His son Nicholas said he died Friday at his home in England.?

Fleischmann?was one of the world's leading electrochemists when he and partner Stanley Pons proclaimed in 1989 that they had sparked fusion, the nuclear process that heats the sun, in an experiment at the University of Utah.

The reaction they reported occurred at room temperature and appeared to give off little radiation, an enormous contrast to the still-ongoing quest to harness fusion by conventional means, in billion-dollar reactors at temperatures of millions of degrees.

The announcement raised the hope of a shortcut to fusion as a clean, renewable and cheap energy source. But when other scientists rushed to replicate the achievement, most failed, and "cold fusion" was quickly labeled junk science. Physicists accused?Fleischmann?of incompetence and fraud.

He and Pons continued to work on ? and defend ? their findings, but they were disheartened by the way their work was ignored by scientists after the debacle of 1989.

"This has been a terrible experience,"?Fleischmann?told German news site Telepolis in 2005.

Research on "cold fusion" persists on the fringes of the scientific world.

Fleischmann?was born in Czechoslovakia. When the Nazis occupied the country in 1938, the family fled to England. To gain legal status for the move,?Fleischmann?was adopted by a British bachelor.

He studied chemistry at the Imperial College in London and became known for a strong grasp of mathematics and an imagination unusual for a chemist. He took over the chemistry department of the University of Southampton in 1967 and gave it an international reputation. He was a fellow of the Royal Society, Britain's Academy of Sciences.

After retiring from the university, he spent a lot of time collaborating on experiments with his friend Pons, an American.

Fleischmann?was an "exploratory genius," said Michael Melich, a friend of?Fleischmann?and a research professor of physics at the Naval Postgraduate School in California.

Evernote updates for iOS, adds tap anywhere to edit

If there's one thing that perpetually frustrates us about Evernote on mobile devices, it's the inability to simply start editing a note when we open it up. As is, you've got open one, then tap the edit button, then you can navigate to the portion of the note you want to tweak. Not exactly the most efficient of workflows. That's finally changed, on the iPad and iPhone at least, and simply tapping anywhere in an entry will immediately open the editing tool, with the cursor exactly where you tapped. It may seem like a minor tweak, but it's one that should help address one of the primarily complaints about the note-taking service's mobile apps -- a lack of convenience. Now, we just hope the same update heads to Android devices. And sooner, rather than later.

(AP) ? Standard Chartered PLC saw around 6.3 billion pounds ($9.9 billion) wiped off its market value Tuesday after the New York state regulator accused the U.K. bank of being involved in laundering money for Iran, dealing a further blow to the City of London's reputation as a financial center.

The charges against Standard Chartered were a shock for a bank which proudly described itself recently as "boring" ? its share price was down as much as 25 percent before rebounding a bit to trade 18 percent lower at 12.07 pounds in late-afternoon trading on the London Stock Exchange.

The falling share rice also affected the main FTSE 100 index in London, which was one of the only European leading indexes to trade lower ? Standard Chartered makes up 1.5 percent of the index's overall market value. In Hong Kong, where the bank's shares are also listed, they finished 14.9 percent lower.

The storm surrounding Standard Chartered is the latest in a summer of scandals for the City of London ? one of the world's leading financial centers. Bob Diamond, the chief executive of Barclays, was forced to step down after his bank was found to have manipulated a key interbank interest rate. HSBC has been fined for failing to stop money-laundering in Mexico and U.S. bank JPMorgan suffered a huge trading loss in its London office.

New York State Department of Financial Services alleged on Monday that Standard Chartered schemed with the Iranian government to launder $250 billion from 2001 to 2007, leaving the U.S. financial system "vulnerable to terrorists."

Standard Chartered said it "strongly rejects" the allegations. In a statement, the bank said "well over 99.9 percent" of the questioned transactions with Iran complied with all regulations, and the exceptions amounted to $14 million.

Last week, Standard Chartered's chief executive, Peter Sands, boasted that the bank has racked up a 10-year string of record first-half profits "amidst all the turbulence in the global economy and the apparently never-ending turmoil in the world of banking."

"It may seem boring in contrast to what is going on elsewhere, but we see some virtue in being boring," Sands added.

Though based in London, Standard Chartered relies heavily on China and other emerging Asian markets.

The New York regulator ordered Standard Chartered representatives to appear in New York City on Aug. 15 "to explain these apparent violations of law" and to demonstrate why its license to operate in the State of New York "should not be revoked."

Gary Greenwood, analyst at Shore Capital in London, said the possible revocation of the New York license was of far greater concern than any potential fine, which could run into hundreds of millions of dollars.

Standard Chartered's U.S. operation facilitates trade for customers that have operations in both the U.S. and emerging markets.

"Indeed, this is an area of the business that has been highlighted by management for growth," Greenwood said. "A loss of its U.S. banking license would not only jeopardize part of this profit stream, but the associated reputational damage could also have a severely damaging impact to its operations within emerging markets."

The New York agency alleged that Standard Chartered conspired with Iranian clients to route nearly 60,000 different U.S. dollar payments through Standard Chartered's New York branch "after first stripping information from wire transfer messages used to identify sanctioned countries, individuals and entities."

The New York regulators called the bank a rogue institution and quoted one of its executives as saying: "You (expletive) Americans. Who are you to tell us, the rest of the world, that we're not going to deal with Iranians."

The order also identifies an October 2006 "panicked message" from a London group executive director who worried the transactions could lead to "very serious or even catastrophic reputational damage to the group."

If proven, the scheme would violate state money-laundering laws. The order also accuses the bank of falsifying business records, obstructing governmental administration, failing to report misconduct to the state quickly, evading federal sanctions and other illegal acts.

Between 2004 and 2007, about half the period covered by the order, the department claims Standard Chartered hid from and lied about its Iranian transactions to the Federal Reserve Bank of New York. Before 2008, banks were allowed to transact some business with Iran, but only with full reporting and disclosure, the order states.

In 2008, the U.S. Treasury Department stopped those transactions because it suspected they helped pay for Iran to develop nuclear weapons and finance terrorist groups including Hamas and Hezbollah. The order states the bank has to provide information and answer questions to determine if any of the funding aided the groups or Iran's nuclear program.

"The extent of the claims, such as falsifying data to avoid investigation, look so damaging that we suggest Standard Chartered will need to put up a much stronger defence to get investors back on side," said Nic Clarke, analyst at stockbrokers Charles Stanley
