For those who are lucky enough to retire in good health and with a partner by their side, it can be a wonderful time to enjoy the company of others and to experience new things and places at a time when we could have think that the discovery was that you went through. Points to use a timeshare exchange network that allows owners to exchange their points in week vacation in luxury resorts around the world, allowing couples to visit all the sites they believed might never quite reached.

Life of Luxury
Buying a big old rock attached to a little gold or silver is fine and good, but if there is nothing luxurious about the rest of your life, then what is a fancy ring? Points Timeshare give owners the opportunity to enjoy affordable luxury five star every time they fly, meaning that each long-term residence or mini break will your partner treated like royalty.

James Howson is an expert in shared ownership and shared time with over a decade of experience buying and selling points timeshare. He has visited hundreds of luxury resorts in exchange networks using diamond points.

Here in Boston, I attended my first day of the Red Hat Summit and came in with a burning question. Is this going to be a ?geek fest? or is there something that business should take notice of now? I do have some answers. First off, there were more business casual folks than ?Linux Penguin T shirt? folks, so I was curious about the innovation that Red Hat was talking about.

IMAG0089

Paul Cormier led it off with a comment about ?IT has no right to exist? and then went on to describe how IT infrastructure tools, provided by Red Hat, would make IT better?? Consistent cloud architecture with bottom up bespoke applications running on middleware. Well this is not really new other than it is more open than the other ?buy the stack Jack? proprietary vendors. IT innovation, maybe business innovation; NOT. It?s like having new underwear under the same old clothes. I?m unmoved.

Ifran Kahn from SAP then talked about decision latency that leverages the kind of infrastructure that is needed. It requires high speed over big data sources online in the cloud. Real time insights that requires speed now makes me warm up.

Adam Burden from Accenture then talked about their commitment to 40000 JAVA developers to build, leverage and convert? applications. I would have been fine had Adam talked about Pace Layering leveraging process in a surround strategy, but that didn?t happen. Unmoved again.

I think I?m not going to have a good day. IT, IT & more IT. Then the tone switched to financial performance(really boring, but positive potential for Red Hat) and press announcements on cloud and storage. Still no BPM and business innovation, but I?m hoping for a better rest of the day.? The next sessions are more ?one on ones? with the BPM folks and they went well. The next blog will summarize where the real Red Hat business innovation will come from going forward. It isn?t just open IT infrastructure in the cloud, but? that is a good base to start.

Family Matters ? Citings and Sightings

one happy family

Earlier this month, Slate published an article by Sociologist Mark Regenerus about the effects of same sex parenting on children.? As part of the New Family Structures Study, Regenerus and his colleagues screened over 15,000 Americans (ages 18-39) and asked them if their biological mother or father ever had a romantic relationship with a member of the same sex. ? When comparing children who answered ?yes? to children from heterosexual married families, they found children from heterosexual married families fared better in economic, educational, social, and psychological outcomes.

This study has prompted many comments and several other articles.? For example, in another article in Slate, William Saletan says that the findings shouldn?t be surprising, as Regenerus?s study is not a study of gay parents who decided to have kids. ?Rather, it?s a study of people who engaged in same sex relationships (and often broke up their families) several decades ago.

?What the study shows, then, is that kids from broken homes headed by gay people develop the same problems as kids from broken homes headed by straight people. But that finding isn?t meaningless. It tells us something important: We need fewer broken homes among gays, just as we do among straights.

Sociologist Debra Umberson also shared reactions, published yesterday in the Huffington Post, to Regenerus?s study. ?Specifically, she focused on methodological concerns.

His definition of children raised by lesbian mothers and gay fathers is incredibly broad ? anyone whose biological or adopted mother or father had a same-sex relationship that the respondent knew about by age 18. Most of these respondents did not even live with their parent?s same-sex partner; in fact, many did not even live with their gay or lesbian parent at all! Of the 175 adult children Regnerus claims were raised by ?lesbian mothers,? only 40 actually lived with their mother and her same-sex partner for at least three years.

Umberson also notes that in order to be considered a child of a heterosexual married family, respondents had to have parents who were continually married from the time of their birth to the time of the survey.? With the wide net cast for same sex relationships, the study likely captured families that had far more stress than average families of that generation, contrasted with very stable heterosexual married families.

What does this tell us? ?According to both Saletan and Umberson, it?s a reminder that stress and instability harm children in any family context.

What a good thing a canvas photo print is

Having a canvas photo print is not just having a photo placed onto a canvas then framed, it?s something that has great meaning and true spirit, and thus by meaning it is true artwork in the making because if you take an original painting done by a painter then you get a very eary and tonal sense that allot of hard work and expertise has gone into the making of the painting but if you look at a canvas print of a painting then you still get a small amount of that same kind of achievement but with a very modern twist to it which is what most people prefer to have in their homes these days and allot of interior designers will use canvas photos and canvas prints for the show rooms and also for their personal shows to give a very warming and very contemporary looks to the room that they are hung in, not only that but having canvas photo prints hung in just one room can have a carry effect on the hole house which is just brilliant.

So yes if you are going to have a?canvas photo print made form you very precious images and photos then a great thing to do would be to have it check by a canvas printer before hand, simply email it across to them and have them check in the computer photo editing software so they can have a look at the print quality before you go ahead and have it printed onto canvas and then that way you will be sure to end up with a quality product at the end of the ordering process.

These is allot of different this you can have printed on canvas and one really good picture to have printed if you?re a fan of any celebrities would be to have one of them printed on to canvas but in a pop art style canvas print, this way you will be able to get a very well know artist on canvas mage into art, pop art is basically taking photo and then changing it in a photo editing software a bit like Photoshop and then changing it into a cartoon style looking picture, once this has been changed you can experiment with it and have different colour to your liking that you think would suite you wall decoration the best, once decided and you have don?t this yourself you can then upload and order this to be put on a canvas print through a certain canvas printing website but if your unable to do this yourself with the pop art then there is canvas printer out there that will offer this type of service so you can go ahead and get them to do the hard work for you which will make an amazing different the appearance of your finished canvas photo print and that all on its own is something? very special that you can treasure for years and years to come..

Minka Kelly Is Maroon 5's Latest Video Vixen

'Minka was kind enough to make an appearance,' Adam Levine says during the 'MTV First' premiere of 'One More Night.'

Have you seen Maroon 5's newest video for "One More Night" yet? MTV News was lucky to have frontman Adam Levine and lead guitarist James Valentine stop by to premiere the clip on MTV during "MTV First: Maroon 5" on Monday, during which we learned that, from the band's point of view, love is battlefield. Or a boxing match, rather.

The concept for "One More Night" was dreamed up by Levine and directed by "Friday Night Lights" and "Battleship" director Peter Berg. It revolves around a boxer dealing with the pressures of providing for and being there for his young wife and baby. The young wife in this case is played by the lovely Minka Kelly, who worked with Berg on "Friday Night Lights." Although Levine and Kelly look every bit a happy couple at the beginning of the video, their romance is not of the fairy-tale variety.

"Minka was kind enough to make an appearance. That was pretty sweet," Levine said of the actress' involvement. "She plays my wife who leaves me." Spoiler alert, Adam! Luckily for everyone involved, the story behind getting Kelly to sign onto the project was a much happier tale than that of the two characters Levine and Kelly play in the video. It was as easy as picking up the phone and making a call.

"She's great," Levine said of Kelly. "The [story behind her involvement] was Pete reaching out to her and saying, 'Hey, do you want to do this?' and her saying 'Yes,' and us saying, 'Thank you!' " Levine explained, before giving her a full-on shout-out. "Thank you, Minka Kelly, for doing our video!"

In addition to her work in the cult hit "Friday Night Lights," Kelly has continued to appear on TV and in film with roles on "Parenthood" and the rebooted "Charlie's Angels," as well as on the big screen in "The Roommate" and a bit part in "(500) Days of Summer." Next up for Kelly is the rumored role of a young Jackie Kennedy in the upcoming ensemble "The Butler" alongside Forest Whitaker, Oprah Winfrey, Matthew McConaughey, John Cusack, Alan Rickman, Jane Fonda, Cuba Gooding Jr. and Lenny Kravitz.

The planer was attached to the stand, but I barely have enough room to pass gas, so it{the stand} will either be disassembled & stored or passed onto someone who can use it. He had no idea what the clamps were used for, but he picked up both the 32"36"? & the 50" for $5.00..after I explained the clamp uses we decided he should keep one for himself{besides, I told him that I knew where he lived if I needed the larger one }...He wouldn't say what he paid for the planer, he just smiled and said he was still "way ahead"...great to have good neighbors, or good to have great neighbors, either/or, I'm blessed to have quite a few on our little street!

I don't know much about this planer except it works fine, it seems. Though I will be making it a permanent home of some sort with in-feed & out-feed tables, currently set-up, it leaves about 2-3 inches of snipe, but hopefully some fine tuning and the possibility of some of you having a tip or two to share will square away most of the bugs I might encounter.

Anyways...sorry for rambling, I'm still giddy over this....hope you all have a great weekend, and be sure to at least wave hi to your neighbors...you just never know...

Family Fun: Day Trips : Ideas for Women Home and Family Blog

Day Trips can be a lot of fun for families. They are cost effective as you don?t have to stay in a hotel and are easy on young children since they don?t always have to do a lot riding in the car. To start day tripping is not hard at? all. First you need to decide how far it is that you want to travel. It could be just a few miles down the road, the next town over, or if you live close enough maybe the next state over.

Next check out what sort of attractions there are that you and your family would enjoy. You don?t have to see them all, in fact that can create fun overload. Pick one or two and enjoy them. If there are several close by you can pick one a few times during the summer or even the year. Some good choices are always large amusement parks, centers. Because they are popular they are almost always crowded. Instead opt for places that are less likely to be full of people. Museums are always a good choice.

The idea is to be able to spend quality, fun time with your family without costing an arm and leg. So hit the road and enjoy!

Researchers tune the strain in graphene drumheads to create quantum dots

ScienceDaily (June 21, 2012) ? Tightening or relaxing the tension on a drumhead will change the way the drum sounds. The same goes for drumheads made from graphene, only instead of changing the sound, stretching graphene has a profound effect on the material's electrical properties. Researchers working at the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) and the University of Maryland have shown that subjecting graphene to mechanical strain can mimic the effects of magnetic fields and create a quantum dot, an exotic type of semiconductor with a wide range of potential uses in electronic devices.

The results were reported in the June 22, 2012, issue of Science.

Graphene is a single layer of carbon atoms arranged in a honeycomb lattice. Able to conduct electricity with little resistance at room temperature, graphene is a prime candidate for applications ranging from flexible displays to high-speed transistors.

However, the same lack of electrical resistance that makes graphene attractive for some uses also makes it ill-suited for digital computing applications. Graphene conducts electricity so well because it doesn't have a band gap -- an energetic threshold beneath which the material won't conduct electricity. This means that graphene can't be turned "off," and computers need "on" and "off" signals to transmit and process information.

Because substrates slow the speed of electrons moving through graphene, Nikolai Klimov, a University of Maryland postdoctoral researcher working at NIST, suspended the graphene over shallow holes in a substrate of silicon dioxide -- essentially making a set of graphene drumheads. To measure the graphene's properties, the team used a unique scanning probe microscope designed and built at NIST.

When they began to probe the drumheads, they found that the graphene rose up to meet the tip of the microscope -- a result of the van der Waals force, a weak electrical force that creates attraction between objects that are very close to each other.

"While our instrument was telling us that the graphene was shaped like a bubble clamped at the edges, the simulations run by our colleagues at the University of Maryland showed that we were only detecting the graphene's highest point," says NIST scientist Nikolai Zhitenev. "Their calculations showed that the shape was actually more like the shape you would get if you poked into the surface of an inflated balloon, like a teepee or circus tent."

The researchers discovered that they could tune the strain in the drumhead using the conducting plate upon which the graphene and substrate were mounted to create a countervailing attraction and pull the drumhead down. In this way, they could pull the graphene into or out of the hole below it.

And their measurements showed that changing the degree of strain changed the material's electrical properties.

For instance, the group observed that when they pulled the graphene membrane into the tent-like shape, the region at the apex acted just like a quantum dot, a type of semiconductor in which electrons are confined to a small region of space.

Creating semiconducting regions like quantum dots in graphene by modifying its shape might give scientists the best of both worlds: high speed and the band gap crucial to computing and other applications.

According to Zhitenev, the electrons flow through graphene by following the segments of the hexagons. Stretching the hexagons lowers the energy near the apex of the tent-like shape and causes the electrons to move in closed, clover-shaped orbits -- mimicking nearly exactly how the electrons would move in a vertically varied magnetic field.

"This behavior is really quite remarkable," says Zhitenev. "There is a little bit of electron leakage, but we found that if we complemented the pseudomagnetic field with an actual magnetic field, there was no leakage whatsoever."

"Normally, to make a graphene quantum dot, you would have to cut out a nanosize piece of graphene," says NIST fellow Joseph Stroscio. "Our work shows that you can achieve the same thing with strain-induced pseudomagnetic fields. It's a great result, and a significant step toward developing future graphene-based devices."

The work was a collaborative effort with the University of Maryland, College Park, and the Korea Research Institute of Standards and Science.

An interdisciplinary team of faculty working with Arizona State University's Center for the Study of Religion and Conflict are exploring what motivates people to be generous and how religion influences their actions

TEMPE (June 20, 2012) - Many people have it in their hearts to be generous, but what motivates their actions?

Generosity is accepted and encouraged as a practice, but the reasons behind the behavior are not well understood. An interdisciplinary team of faculty working with Arizona State University's Center for the Study of Religion and Conflict are exploring what motivates people to be generous and how religion influences their actions.

The study is funded through a $363,000 grant from the John Templeton Foundation/University of Notre Dame Science of Generosity Initiative. Aspects of generosity that researchers are examining through the initiative include how one person's kindness to others affects the recipient's kindness in the future and what the difference is between those who are giving and those who aren't.

"Generosity is an important part of human behavior that we don't know much about," said Carolyn Warner, ASU School of Politics and Global Studies professor and principal investigator for the ASU project. "It wouldn't hurt if there were more of it in the world."

Warner and her team are identifying generosity motivators in religions through a comparative study of Muslims and Catholics. Their aim is to discover aspects of religion that motivate people to give of their time, effort and financial resources, and how those motivators might be similar or different in two of the world's major religions.

"There have been studies about people who are religious that find that they tend to be more generous than people who aren't. There's a debate about that. We aren't trying to determine whether people who are religious are more or less generous," Warner said.

"What we want to know is what is it in the religious experience that might prompt generosity," she added.

ASU psychology professor Adam Cohen and Ramazan Kilinc, a political scientist at the University of Nebraska, joined Warner as co-principal investigators in the study that took them to Dublin, Milan, Paris and Istanbul.

"We traveled to these countries because of the focus on Catholicism and Islam," Warner said.

Researchers examined factors within each religion that might motivate generosity, such as a sense of duty to one's God, the love of Jesus or Mohammad, feelings of being blessed and the way each religion is organized. The work involved interviews, participating in religious group activities and conducting experiments.

"These kinds of studies are very important for understanding the varied role that religion plays in society," said Linell Cady, director of the Center for the Study of Religion and Conflict. "So much attention is focused on conflict that attention is needed to understand those values and resources within religion that provide the building blocks for strong, vibrant communities."

The study's findings were extremely clear in some cases such as motivation to give. Muslims strongly feel that if they are blessed then they have an obligation to God to share with those less fortunate than themselves. They also feel that they are following in the footsteps of the Prophet Mohammad by being charitable to others. Catholics don't see an obligation to God as a primary motivator to help others; instead, their love for Jesus motivates them to help others.

Commonalities were also apparent. Members of both religions were more likely to volunteer to help if the person asking for the donation was personally known to the member, such as an imam, priest or other person who is admired within the religious institution.

Another common thread exists within the positive experience of giving and actually connecting with people you are helping, such as working at a soup kitchen and sitting down to eat with someone who is down on their luck.

A third commonality was an extensive reliance on volunteers to help sustain the religious entity, such as the parish church or Islamic association. Researchers found that Catholicism is less hierarchical than commonly thought. Many religious functions are carried out by the laity, and they respond by helping. Muslims also felt a strong sense of responsibility to contribute to the daily functions of their religious associations.

"People are very giving," Warner said. "Community is very important for Muslims and Catholics, not in terms of peer pressure to behave in certain ways, but because they like being with other people. They find it gratifying to help others and to interact with those in need."

Another finding points to the crucial roles of religious organizations in connecting people who need help with government social-service organizations.

"They are the ones often making the connection and bringing that person to the state or city office to start getting help," Warner said. "They fill in the cracks, along with secular volunteer groups."

Challenges that the researchers needed to overcome during the study included gaining access to parishioners in the Catholic churches and organizing psychology experiments with Catholics and Muslims in Dublin and Istanbul, respectively.

"Catholics are more reticent to talk about money or the extent to which they are helping others. They are supposed to be modest about those things," Warner said. "The Islamic associations we worked with were open to our study because they welcomed the opportunity to help increase the understanding of Islam."

The experiments were conducted on site with people from the community.

"We wanted to find out how the religions affect their believers in their own settings," Warner said.

Officials from both religions expressed interest in learning about the primary generosity motivators among their members.

"People are interested in finding out about their own religion," Warner said. "For many of the study participants, the experience of being generous is, in and of itself, profoundly religious."
